National Monument to the Dead of World War II. In an architecture covered in symbolism, MNMSGM in Portuguese, projected by the architects Hélio Ribas Marinho and Marcos Konder Netto, with pieces from sculptors Júlio Catelli Filho and Alfredo Chesciati, sum up historical value to Brazilian nation. National Monument to the dead of World War II (MNMSGM in Portuguese), popular called “Monumento aos Pracinhas”, was idealized by Marshal João Baptista Mascarenhas de Moraes, Commander “Força Expedicionária Brasileira” (FEB) – The Brazilian Expeditionary Force (BEF) with the objective to honor and repatriate the remains of the Brazilians killed on the battlefields in Italy, buried in Pistoia in the time of conflict. In December 1960, the 468 urns with the remains of Brazilian soldiers were transferred from Italy and delivered in a military solemnity, inaugurating MNMSGM. The monument consists in a hall of exhibits with a permanent collection of military material used on World War II; a mausoleum with the 468 soldiers remains; a huge portico 31 meters high; a sculpture group from Alfredo Chesciati, portraying Brazilian soldiers from the three Military Forces and a metal sculpture related to Brazilian Air force, from sculpture Júlio Catelli Filho.
