Futuros Arte e Tecnologia presents MUSEHUM – Museum of Communications and Humanities, which tells the story of the technological development of communications from the perspective of human relations. The project is an evolution of the Telecommunications Museum, in operation for 13 years, which had the installations totally remodeled due to this new conceptual proposal and identity. With unprecedented interactive attractions, immersive environments and new technologies, the museum offers to the public a unique experience at each visit. With free entry, the space is located inside the Oi Futuro Cultural Center, in the Flamengo neighborhood.
After six months closed for modernization works, the space reopens transformed, with personalized experiences for each participant and new content and interaction platforms, using technologies such as virtual reality, interactive touch sensitive displays, 3D digital photography, high-resolution LED monitors. definition, cell phone, game and others. The main proposal is for the visitor to feel part of the museum, combining past and future, memory and trends, to provoke reflection on the impact of communications on the development of humanity. In addition, the museum brings an innovative expographic project, with accessibility for all audiences, and an unprecedented selection of pieces from the collection, some never before exhibited.
“We want to surprise the visitor, who may have unprecedented experiences and can recognize himself as a fundamental part of this story that we are telling, as a dynamic collection of the museum. Here we go beyond interaction: the public is an active collaborator in the construction of the museum, because communication, truly, is the exchange of affections, knowledge and information, and people are the protagonists of these processes. It is the human that gives meaning to technology ”, explains Roberto Guimarães, executive manager of Culture at Futuros Arte e Tecnologia.
Among the novelties that the public will find at MUSEHUM are:
Immersive environment: Who am I on social networks and real networks?
In this museum, technology is present not only in the forms of interaction, but also in the content presented. In groups of two to four people, the audience enters a mirrored capsule, where they are surrounded by an experience of lights, sounds and visual effects that reveals their own digital tracks and connections; the installation reinforces the need to keep our ties out of the digital environment.
Virtual Reality Experience: In the fold of time
With the use of virtual reality glasses, the visitor makes a kind of time travel, in which he knows the past of the historic building that houses the museum, where the Beira-Mar Telephone Station functioned for over 100 years, with dozens of telephone operators. in full swing, working to connect people. The reconstitution of the environment was created from real cases found in research carried out in the museum’s documentary collection;
Super-selfie: I became a museum piece
On this device, the visitor can take a selfie and generate a large 3D digital photo, which shows a deconstructed version of his own image;
Cabinet of curiosities: objects, memories, affections
The public will be able to know more than 400 historical objects from different periods: telephone sets of different design, cell phones, operator’s desks, public telephones, cameras, radios, televisions, computers and industrial telecommunications equipment, arranged in thematic niches, some of them open to that visitors can touch items;
Digital windows: the collection at your fingertips
Through four large touch-sensitive monitors, the public can explore the museum collection of Oi Futuro, which has more than 130,000 items, including historical objects, period photos, documents and telephone directories. The visitor can browse “playlists” of pieces from the collection, suggested by the curators of the museum based on specific subjects or times;
From Telecommunications Museum to MUSEHUM
The institution was born as the Telephone Museum, opened in 1981 in the centenary building of Rua Dois de Dezembro, where the Beira-Mar telephone station operated, one of the main stations in Rio de Janeiro in the early days of Brazilian telephony. In 2007, the museum gained a broader perspective by turning the Museum of Telecommunications, to address the expansion of the internet, cell phones and the telecom industry. Now, as MUSEHUM – Museum of Communications and Humanities, Oi Futuro takes a step forward by centering the museum’s narrative on human relations, understanding that it is not enough to talk about technology without dealing with the exchange of affections and knowledge that motivates connections and networks and also the impact of expanding connectivity on society. This new vision motivated a repositioning of the brand and a physical and technological restructuring of the space, to place the visitor at the center of the visitation experience and contemplate it as an integral part of the museum’s repertoire.
With a collection of more than 130,000 pieces, the museum is also expanding by 30% the number of objects on permanent display, including some never seen by the public. Among the curiosities are a 1900 telephone card counter, a 19th century French telephone exchange and an analog rotary file used by telephone operators in the first decades of the 20th century, a kind of great-uncle of the database. However, the new format of the museum makes it possible for the curators to renew the exhibition more frequently, both in the selection of collection items and in the multimedia content available for interactivity, so that at each visit, the public will have news to discover and experience.
