Little Africa Cultural Center works on preserving and recuperating African-Brazilian culture in Rio.

Located in Casa da Guarda, in Valongo’s Suspended Garden, the institution aims to reestablish and to preserve the cultural values of the old Pequena África (Little Africa), a region that now houses the neighborhoods of Saúde, Gamboa, Santo Cristo and part of Downtown, and that was once the first dwelling of the Africans that arrived in Rio de Janeiro and their descendants. Nowadays, the area is occupied by communities that originated from former quilombos of Pedra do Sal and Santo Cristo. The space promotes regular gatherings with samba circles, cultural activities and debates, all part of an effort to recover and enrich our appreciation for the history and the culture of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.
