Ukrainian, naturalized Brazilian, and one of the most important writers of the 20th century, Clarice Lispector made her readers fall in love with her. Among the 20 male bronze statues, Clarice now reigns, ruling as the only woman to be portrayed in real size. The work, authorized by the Secretariat of Conservation, signed by visual artist Edgar Duvivier, cost R$90 thousand. The project was financed with the help of collaborators and with the sales of models of the statue to admirers of the writer.
The idea of the homage came from the professor and Clarice’s biographer Teresa Monteiro, who was helped by the actress Beth Goulart, who plays the writer in the theater. Another one of Clarice’s places in Brazil, Pernambuco, also houses a statue in her honor, in the Boa Vista region, Recife, in front of the house she has lived in. The chosen place in Rio for the homage was the Leme neighborhood, where she lived for 12 years. She passed away at age 56, but she always used to read by the wall next to Posto 1 with her dog Ulisses, also portrayed in the sculpture.
