The Calouste Gulbenkian Art Center was created on the 11th of March in 1871, on Praça Onze, and is named Calouste Gulbenkian as a tribute to the Portuguese cultural institute that had its headquarters in Lisbon – the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The center was built in a building with an interior of 8,800 square-meters and an exterior area of 1,733 square-meters, containing 32 rooms on its interior and with resources donated by the Foundation to the Brazilian government. The three-story building houses the Gonzaguinha Theatre, an auditorium, a video room, the Ismael Nery Art Gallery and twenty rooms and workshops where there are formation courses for artists and technicians in art-related occupations.
