The Solar do Jambeiro is a space for leisure that offers cultural activities such as exhibitions, recitals, plays and classes, and its facade holds one of the most important collection of tiles in Brazil.
The Solar do Jambeiro was built in 1872 by Bento Joaquim Alves Pereira, a rich Portuguese man that lived in Rio de Janeiro, and it is an exceptional example of urban bourgeois residential architecture of the 19th century. In 1974, IPHAN declared it a listed buildin. The facade of the two-story house is covered in authentic patterned tiles, a common feature of Portuguese architecture of the time. The Solar do Jambeiro holds the Campofiorito Collection and promotes cultural activities in its rooms. On the outside, its green gardens filled with trees are open to the public and are an important leisure space in the city. The Solar also has an annex building which houses the Coordenação de Documentação e Pesquisa (Document and Research Coordination Center), whose objective is to carry out and encourage historical research about the city of Niterói.
