In 1990, Selarón began the work on the staircase, which would later become one of the city’s iconic landmarks.

The staircase, located between Joaquim Silva Street in Lapa and Pinto Martins Street in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, is just a five-minute walk from the Arcos da Lapa. Created by the Chilean visual artist Jorge Selarón, the staircase features a collection of various tiles from different parts of Brazil and around the world. Vibrantly colored, it has been the backdrop for music videos by U2 and Snoop Dogg, in addition to being a popular spot for Rio locals and thousands of city visitors to take photographs.
