Given to the State Government in 1983, six months before of the owner Laura Alvim dies, the house was transformed in a Cultural Centre and inaugurated in May 12nd, in 1986, two years after her death. Today, it belongs to FUNARJ/ Fundação Anita Mantuano de Artes from Rio de janeiro, linked to the State Secretary for the Culture. The space follows closely the proposal of its creator and serves as a stage for different artistic manifestations.
Woman in front of her time, Laura wanted to be actress, but her family has never allowed her. She resolved to do from this frustration a stimulus: built in the dependence of the house a stage, where she declaimed and performed for friends, promoted meetings between veterans and young artists, always encouraging culture.
The house has been recently renovated and now features three movie screening rooms, two theaters, an exhibition gallery, bistros, multipurpose rooms, an area for events and a studio to record and edit music. The space also offers theater and visual arts classes and workshops, helping to educate young artists. A exhibition room showcasing her personal belongings and dedicated to telling the history of Laura is currently being assembled.
