The Royal Court of Carnaval 2024

One of the biggest traditions of the Rio Carnival, the Contest to elect the new Royal Court for 2024, was carried out in a fiercely contested competition. Divided into two parts, the election stirred the world of samba, captivating carnival enthusiasts!

The first members were introduced to the public in September 2023, after a month-long competition held at the City of Samba as the festive stage. To complete the team symbolizing Carnival, the remaining members were elected in December.

The reign includes: Queen, Muse, King Momo, Muse, 1st Princess, Non-Binary Citizen, and 2nd Princess, who will shine with charm and samba skills throughout the carnival period on the streets of Rio.

Meet the Royal Court of Carnival 2024:

Queen: Gabriella Mendes – @gaby.mendes020

A trained nutritionist and a dancer for Mocidade, Gabriella Mendes, 20, began her journey in childhood at Estrela-Guia de Padre Miguel. In the contest, she surpassed over 100 candidates through five stages and was elected Queen.

“I am very happy, very emotional to be representing our grand celebration. It was a great thrill to be in this contest, which made me evolve during this one month of competition, made me grow, made me see my mistakes and want to correct them. There was a lot of sacrifice, but thanks to God, I succeeded, and now I am the Carnival Queen,” shared the new Queen in an interview with @sitecarnavalesco.

King Momo: Caio Cesar Dutra – @kaiomackenzie_

The King Momo has a simple mission: to make the people happy during the days of revelry. This mission, as mentioned by the late João Nogueira, will be entrusted to Caio Cesar Dutra. Known in the samba universe as Kaio Mackenzie, he will be one of the representatives of our carnival in 2024. A trader by profession, he is also a dancer for the Estação Primeira de Mangueira. He carries carnival in his veins since the age of five when his aunts took him to São Clemente. Two years later, he became the first child dancer. He has also had successful stints with Acadêmicos do Engenho da Rainha (2014 to 2020), Unidos de Bangu (2018), Renascer de Jacarepaguá (2019), and since 2023, he has been leading the samba dancers’ section of Caprichosos de Pilares.

 

Princess : Bruna dos Santos  – @eubruneca_

The first princess is Bruna dos Santos. Also known by the affectionate nickname Bruneca, she began her journey in revelry in 2015 with Mangueira do Amanhã. Later, she rose to the position of the first princess in the children’s association until her debut in the samba dancers’ section of the main school, Mangueira, in 2023. Now, as the newest member of the Carnival Court, the young woman made a point of highlighting the significance of this composition of the carnival royalty for the coming year, where all the members come from communities of samba schools.

“I am still in ecstasy. Very happy, extremely grateful, honored to be in the Court, regardless of being the second Princess, first Princess, or Queen (…) May we bring a lot of joy, a lot of truth, and also the best we have to offer, which is our samba skills,” said the princess in an interview @sitecarnavalesco.

Princess:  Ana Carolina de Souza – @acarolpadilha

Esthetician and psychology student, Ana Carolina Padilha is 33 years old and a mother to Matheus. Her carnival journey has always been connected to Unidos de Bangu, where she started as a samba dancer, engaged in other segments, until being chosen as the muse of the community.

“With much love and respect for the carnival, I am willing to make a complete commitment to the court and my crown,” declared the second princess.

 

Muse: Camila da Silva Carvalho – @kcarvalho4

The elected muse, Camila da Silva Carvalho, also stood out for her strength and elegance in the art of samba. Her speech stamped her presentation: “Carnival is an inclusive celebration. I thank the City Hall for hosting the first edition of the LGBTQIAPN+ contest. It brings us joy and happiness and requires real bodies. It’s our representation. A gesture of love and affection.”

Muse: Alexander Mota Rodrigues – @sou_musojr

The elected muse, Camila da Silva Carvalho, also stood out for her strength and elegance in the art of samba. Her speech stamped her presentation: “Carnival is an inclusive celebration. Non-Binary PersonThe Royal Court of Carnival 2024: Marcelo Mattos – @marcello_mtts

Marcelo Mattos, a 21-year-old digital influencer, winner in the non-binary category, demonstrated a lot of joy in a performance that marked the election. When asked about the behavior he should have towards the other members of the court and the general population, he declared, “I am a person of respect for myself and for society as a whole. Before giving respect to someone, we have to respect ourselves. We have to have self-love and love for others, be polite to people.”
